What was the situation in 1848? The North controlled the House, while the South wanted equal power in the Senate, and there were 15 slave states and 13 free states.
What was the Wilmot Proviso? The Wilmot Proviso proposed that all land gained from Mexico should be free and not allow slavery.
What did the Compromise of 1850 do? The Compromise of 1850 made California a free state, allowed popular sovereignty in other territories, passed the Fugitive Slave Act, and delayed the Civil War.
What is popular sovereignty? Popular sovereignty means that people in a territory vote to decide whether slavery is allowed.
Why was Uncle Tom’s Cabin important? Uncle Tom’s Cabin was important because it showed how cruel slavery was and increased anti-slavery feelings in the North.
What did the Kansas-Nebraska Act do? The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed territories to decide about slavery using popular sovereignty and led to violence.
What was Bleeding Kansas? Bleeding Kansas was a period of violent fighting between pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups in Kansas.
