| Democratic-Republican | — A member of an early political party started by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison that favored more power for state governments and farmers. |
| Judicial review | — The power of the courts to decide whether laws or actions by the government follow the Constitution. |
| Radical | — A person or idea that wants big, fast changes in politics or society, often beyond what most people think is reasonable. |
| Lewis and Clark Expedition | — A long trip led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (1804–1806) to explore the land west of the Mississippi River after the Louisiana Purchase. |
| William Clark | — Co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who helped map and record plants, animals, and Native American peoples. |
| Sacagawea | — A Shoshone woman who helped guide and translate for the Lewis and Clark Expedition and assisted them in building good relations with Native groups. |
