Jefferson Era

TermDefinition
Thomas Jefferson — Third President of the United States who helped write the Declaration of Independence and led the country when the United States bought the Louisiana Territory.
Federalist — A member of an early political group that wanted a stronger national government and supported leaders like Alexander Hamilton.
Aaron Burr — An early American politician who served as Vice President and is known for his duel with Alexander Hamilton.
Democratic-Republican — A member of an early political party started by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison that favored more power for state governments and farmers.
Judicial review — The power of the courts to decide whether laws or actions by the government follow the Constitution.
Radical — A person or idea that wants big, fast changes in politics or society, often beyond what most people think is reasonable.
Lewis and Clark Expedition — A long trip led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (1804–1806) to explore the land west of the Mississippi River after the Louisiana Purchase.
William Clark — Co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who helped map and record plants, animals, and Native American peoples.
Sacagawea — A Shoshone woman who helped guide and translate for the Lewis and Clark Expedition and assisted them in building good relations with Native groups.
Louisiana Purchase — The 1803 deal in which the United States bought a huge area of land from France, doubling the size of the country.
Meriwether Lewis — Co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who kept detailed journals of the journey and studied the plants, animals, and geography they found.
