| ecosystem | A group of organisms together in its environment |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| observe | to use any of the five senses to gather information about something |
| organism | an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form. |
| soil | the upper layer of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay, and rock particles. |
| abiotic factor | a nonliving part of an ecosystem |
| biotic factor | a living part of an ecosystem |
| habitat | where a living thing lives |
| decomposer | an organism that breaks down dead organisms and recycles nutrients back into the soil |
| food chain | the path energy takes from one organism to another within an ecosystem |
| photosynthesis | process plants use to make food from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide |
| producer | an organism that produces its own food, such as a plant |
| consumer | an organism that consumes another organism |
| food web | multiple overlapping food chains showing complex relationships and how energy moves through an ecosystem |
