| Term | Definition |

| base (of a power) | the base of a power is the common factor |
| exponent | indicates the number of times a base is used as a factor |
| power | a product of repeated factors |
| Power of a Product Property | find the power of each factor and multiply |
| Product of Powers Property | to multiply powers with the same base, add their exponents |
| Property of Negative Exponents | For any integer n and any nonzero number a^-n is the reciprocal of a^n |
| Property of Zero Exponents | For any nonzero number a, a^0 = 1. The power of 0^0 is undefined. |
| Quotient of Powers Property | to divide powers with the same base, subtract their exponents |
| scientific notation | when a number is represented as the product of a factor and a power of 10. The factor must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. |
