mainland a large continuous extent of land that includes the greater part of a country or territory, as opposed to offshore islands and detached territories.
archhipelago an area that contains a chain or group of islands scattered in lakes, rivers, or the ocean
peninsula a piece of land that is almost entirely surrounded by water but is connected to the mainland on one side
alluvium clay, silt, sand and gravel
loess a kind of fine dirt or dust that's made up of silt, sand, and clay.
typhoon a giant, rotating storm that brings wind, rain, and destruction
monsoon a shift in winds that often causes a very rainy season or a very dry season
eruption an explosion of steam and lava from a volcano
tsunami giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea
buddhism believe that human beings have the potential to become free from suffering by practicing meditation and cultivating a lifestyle prescribed by the Buddha
hinduism a belief in the universal law of cause and effect (karma) and reincarnation
confucianism a system of social and ethical philosophy rather than a religion
arable fit for or cultivated by plowing
subsistence farming/fishing form of farming in which nearly all of the crops or livestock raised are used to maintain the farmer and the farmer's family, leaving little, if any, surplus for sale or trade
isolation/isolated completely alone
dynasty a series of rulers or leaders who are all from the same family, or a period when a country is ruled by them.
nomad a person who moves from place to place rather than settling down and living in one area.
