Ecology Terms Gr. 7

TermDefinition
Ecosystem The community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving surroundings
Ecology The study of how organisms interact with their environment
Population All the members of one species i a particular area
Community All the different populations that live together in an area
Habitat The specific environment that provides the things an organism needs to live, grow and reproduce
Limiting factor An environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing
Carrying capacity The largest population that an area can support
Decomposer Organism that breaks down chemicals from wastes & dead org & returns important minerals to soil/water
Producer An organism that can make its own food
Consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Symbiosis A close relationship between two organisms of diff species that benefits at least one of the organisms
Mutualism A close relationship between organisms of two species in which both organisms benefit
Commensalism A relationship between 2 species in which 1 species benefits and the other is neither helped or harmed
Parasitism A relationship in which one organism lives on or in a host and harms it
Niche The role of an organism in its habitat, or how it makes its living
Biotic factor A living part of an organism's habitat
Abiotic factor A nonliving part of an organism's habitat
Succession The series of predictable changes that occur in a community over time
Food chain A series of events in which one organism eat another and obtains energy
Food web The pattern of overlapping food chains in an ecosystem
Food pyramid A diagram that depicts the energy transfer from one level to another
Herbivore A consumer that eats only plants
Carnivore A consumer that eats only animals
Omnivore A consumer that eats both plants and animals
Scavenger An organism that feeds off of the bodies of dead organisms
