Water

TermDefinition
watershed An area of land that drains all the streams and precipitation downhill to a common outlet, such as creeks, rivers, lakes, aquifers, etc.
surface water visible on the surface of the Earth (lakes, streams, rivers, oceans, etc)
ground water water that is NOT visible on the surface of Earth, it flows underground
aquifer an underground layer of permeable rock where water can flow through or be stored; made of sand, soil, gravel, or limestone
recharge zone an area where water seeps down into the ground and adds to the groundwater supply in an aquifer.
hydrosphere all of the water on Earth
How do humans impact freshwater on earth? pollution, eutrophication, stream modification, urban development
pollution the contamination of the environment by substances harmful to life (runoff from factories, fertilizer, animal waste, etc)
eutrophication excess nutrients in a water system which causes an increase in the algae growth, caused from fertilizer or sewage runoff
stream modification dams/reservoirs; can increase the erosion along river banks; can act as a geographical barrier for animals
urban development many wetlands have been drained and filled with concrete to make roads, buildings; leads to habitat loss for animals and increased flooding
