TermDefinitionPart of Speech
Archetype a universal, recurring symbol, character type, setting, or plot pattern in literature that evokes a deep, instinctive response across cultures and time periods n The shadow realm is a very common archetype.
Era a distinct span of time in history defined by shared intellectual, artistic, cultural, or social characteristics in literature n The hadeon era was just rocks.
Movement a collective trend in literature where a group of authors, often within a specific timeframe or location, share common philosophies, artistic styles, themes, or goals n There was a movement where a group of artists went on strike.
Historical Account a narrative or record documenting past events, often focusing on accuracy, evidence, and chronological order n He had a historical account of leading protests.
Position an author's stance or relationship to the topic and audience n The author's position was moving further from the main focus.
Coherent a logically organized piece of writing where ideas, sentences, and paragraphs connect clearly to create an easily understood whole adj His story was coherent and easy to understand.
Focus the central controlling idea, theme, or topic that anchors a text ensuring coherence by directing the audience’s attention to essential details n His main focus was to inspire others.
Connotation the emotional, cultural, or associative meanings attached to a word beyond its literal definition n That word had a connotation that many did not know about.
Curate to select, organize, and present content, items, or artistic works, often using expert knowledge to provide context or a specific theme v The author did not know he had to curate a story to the audience.
Text feature a component of a text that helps readers locate, understand, and organize information, particularly in non-fiction. For example, indexes, page numbers, headings, illustrations, and captions. n There were many text features in the story that made it feel real and suspenseful.
Herded moved a group of people or animals in a particular direction v The cows were herded into the barn.
Sharp highly intelligent, perceptive, and able to understand complex situations rapidly adj The boy was sharp and highly intelligent.
boarded lived and ate at a location (often someone’s home) for payment v The passengers boarded the plane.
drafted involuntarily and mandatorily enlisted into military service v The soldiers were drafted into the deadly war.
ignorant Lacking knowledge or awareness; uneducated or unsophisticated adj The ignorant boy was always there to ruin something.
Flung thrown with force v The paper was flung into the trash can.
cataplted thrown with machine-like force v The stone was catapulted from the man's arm
lurched staggered; moved unsteadily v The old man was lurched and needed assistance.
struggling trying to do with difficulty adj The boy was struggling with the math problem.
impairments injury; damage n There were many impairments on the girl's leg.
frustrated prevented from accomplishing adj He was frustrated by all the homework he had.
