Matter

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
category A particular group of people or things that are all the same type
property A quality that a substance has. Examples include: shinyt, malleable, soft, hard, smooth, rough
system A group of related parts that work together as a whole for a particular purpose
component One of the several parts that make up a whole system
matter Anything that has weight and takes up space. Examples include: soil, water, air
volume The amount of space inside an object or the amount of space that an object uses (a form of measurement)
particle The smallest possible unit of matter. They are too small to be seen with just your eyes. (atoms)
diffusion The process by which particles of one substance spread out through the particles of another substance. Diffusion is how smells spread out through the air.
microbe Microscopic organisms that an only be seen with a microscope. Microbes are decomposers- certain types of fungi and bacteria are microbes.
