| Term | Definition |

| category | A particular group of people or things that are all the same type |
| property | A quality that a substance has. Examples include: shinyt, malleable, soft, hard, smooth, rough |
| system | A group of related parts that work together as a whole for a particular purpose |
| component | One of the several parts that make up a whole system |
| matter | Anything that has weight and takes up space. Examples include: soil, water, air |
| volume | The amount of space inside an object or the amount of space that an object uses (a form of measurement) |
| particle | The smallest possible unit of matter. They are too small to be seen with just your eyes. (atoms) |
| diffusion | The process by which particles of one substance spread out through the particles of another substance. Diffusion is how smells spread out through the air. |
| microbe | Microscopic organisms that an only be seen with a microscope. Microbes are decomposers- certain types of fungi and bacteria are microbes. |
