Biodiversity
| Term | Definition |

| Species diversity | The number or variety of species in the world or in a particular region |
| Genetic diversity | differences in DNA among individuals within a species or population |
| Ecosystem diversity | the number and variety of ecosystems within a particular area |
| Threatened species | a species that is likely to become endangered soon throughout all or AKA vulnerable species |
| habitat fragmentation | the division of habitat into smaller patches |
| poaching | the illegal capture or killing of a an organism |
| Captive breeding | The process of breeding and raising organisms under controlled conditions |
| endemic | found in one area of the world |
| biodiversity | the variety of organisms in an area, by species, genes, populations, and communities |
| latitudinal gradient | the observed pattern where biodiversity (number of species) is highest in the tropics near the equator and steadily decreases toward the polar regions |
| sixth mass extinction | the ongoing, rapid disappearance of species - plants, animals, and microorganisms - caused by human activity rather than natural disasters |
| Endangered Species Act | the major law in the United States that protects biodiversity (1973) AKA - ESA |
| Species Survival Plan | a plan carried out by zoos and aquariums to protect species AKA - SSP |
| biodiversity hotspot | an area that supports a large number of native species and is under high threat of destruction |
