Oil Change

TermDefinition
viscosity A measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow; higher viscosity means thicker oil that flows more slowly, especially important because oil viscosity affects lubrication at different temperatures and is specified by grades like SAE 5W-30.
oil filter A device that removes dirt, metal particles, and other contaminants from engine oil to protect engine components and maintain oil cleanliness.
spin on filter A self-contained, disposable oil filter with a threaded mounting that screws directly onto the engine; it houses the filter element, gasket, and bypass valve in one unit.
filter cartridge A replaceable internal filter element that fits into a permanent housing (rather than replacing the whole canister); only the cartridge is changed during service.
oil pan the reservoir bolted to the bottom of an engine that collects and stores engine oil; it contains the oil pan plug for draining and often houses the oil pickup screen.
filter gasket A rubber or composite sealing ring on an oil filter (or filter housing) that prevents oil leaks at the filter-to-engine mating surface.
contaminants Foreign materials in the oil such as dirt, metal shavings, soot, coolant, and water that degrade oil performance and can cause engine wear if not removed.
oil pressure The fluid pressure generated by the oil pump that forces oil through passages and filters to lubricate engine parts; correct oil pressure is critical for bearing protection and is monitored by gauges/sensors.
filter wrench A tool designed to grip and turn spin-on oil filters for removal and installation; comes in several types (strap, cup, band) matched to filter size and space constraints.
torque The rotational force applied to fasteners; when tightening oil-related parts (oil pan bolts, oil pan plug, oil filter—if specified), using the correct torque prevents leaks or damage.
oil pan plug The threaded bolt that seals the oil drain hole in the oil pan; it is removed to drain used oil and must be properly tightened (often with a torque spec) and sealed with a gasket or crush washer if required.
bypass valve A pressure-actuated valve inside many oil filters that allows oil to bypass the filter element if the filter is clogged or if oil is too thick (cold start), ensuring continued oil flow to the engine.
oil pickup The part inside the oil pan that draws oil into the oil pump through a screened inlet to prevent large debris from entering the pump.
crush washer A soft metal or composite washer placed under the oil pan plug to create a tight seal; it is often replaced each oil change to prevent leaks
used oil disposal The safe, legal process of collecting and recycling or disposing of drained engine oil and oil filters; used oil is hazardous and must be taken to an approved recycling center or collection site rather than thrown in trash or poured down drains.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
