Compare the Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta, their people and their achievements. Which one had the more lasting effects on Greece? Why? Athens left a more lasting impact because its foundations in democracy, philosophy, and art became the blueprint for Western civilization, whereas Sparta’s influence was primarily limited to its military era.
What were some of Solon's great reforms in Athens? Solon helped the poor by canceling all their debts and making it illegal to enslave people who couldn't pay what they owed.
Why did Athens need to trade with other city-states and colonies, and what products did they trade with? Athens needed to trade primarily because its rocky, non-fertile soil made it impossible to grow enough grain to feed its large and growing population.
