Constant Bass
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Composer1 | William Gillock was a US pianist and composer. He was born in Missouri in 1917, and died in Texas in 1993. Gillock worked as a teacher and adjudicator in New Orleans and Dallas. |
| Composer2 | His compositions are attractive and accessible, and make use of classical, jazz and contemporary techniques. |
| Title | The constant bass uses a steady crochet rhythm in the left hand. This is a common feature of jazz music, and is sometimes called a "walking" bass. |
| Time Signature | Four crotchet beats in a bar (simple quadruple time). |
| anacrusis | An incomplete bar at the start of the piece. |
| triplet | Inidcates three notes, or notes and rests, played in the time of two. It is customary to play the paired quavers unevenly in this style of music; dotted quaver and semiqaver groups may also be played in this swing rhythm. |
| Key | C major, there is no modulation - the added sharps and flats give the piece a "jazzy" sound, without changing the key. |
| ♩ = 132 | Means that the suggested tempo is 132 crotchet beats per minute. |
| > | Indicates an accent, which means emphasised. |
| simile | Means continue in a similar manner (referring to the staccato signs). |
| decresc. | Decrescendo, means gradually becoming softer. |
| 8va | Ottava, means play an octave higher than written. |
| 8ba | Ottava bassa, means play an octave lower than written. |
| Analysis | The constant bass is in ternary (ABA) form, with a coda. Section A and Section B each contain 12 bars, resembling a "12 bar blues" chord progression. |
