Arytenoid cartilage Open/close vocal cords like a door; help ability to talk
Apex Aid in lung expansion
Hilum Where the primary brochi enter, as well as, blood, lymphatic vessels and nerves enter
Base Supports lung expansion
Cardiac notch Allow space for the heart
Lobes and fissure Help organize lung tissue for efficient airflow
Bronchus main air passage that carry air from trachea into the lungs
Pleura double-layered membrane around the lungs that reduces friction during breathing
Brionchiole (small branches) bring air between between bronchi to alveoli
Alveolar duct connect bronchioles to alveolar sac
Alveoli site of gas exchange
Elastic fibers allow the alveoli walls to stretch during air intake for greater surface area
Capillaries enable O2 to diffuse from alveoli into the blood & CO2 to transfer from blood to alveoli to be exhaled
Bronchus in microscope w/ hyaline cartilage
Bronchiole in microscope w/o hyaline cartilage
Tidal volume # of air in and out of lungs (normal breathing)
Inspiratory reserve volume # of air inhaled after tv
Expiratory reserve volume # of air exhaled after tv
Residual volume air in lungs even after deep exhalation
