Vocab definitions and example sentences

deportation n-The act of expelling someone from a country. The government announced stricter policies on deportation.
detention n-The act of keeping someone in custody. (ex. A political prisoner.) The conditions in detention were difficult for many migrants.
fugitive n-A person who has escaped or is in hiding to avoid arrest. The fugitive managed to escape before the police arrived.
quarrels n-arguments; disagreements Minor quarrels can grow into bigger conflicts if ignored.
Gestapo n-secret police force of Nazi Germany, known for its brutality Many citizens feared the Gestapo and avoided speaking openly.
foreboding n-sudden feeling that something bad is going to happen He felt a strange foreboding as he entered the dark house.
apprehension n-fearful feeling about what will happen next She felt a sense of apprehension before the test.
intuition n-ability to see the truth of something immediately without reasoning She trusted her intuition and made the right decision
mounting adj-increase gradually; building up He felt mounting anxiety before the big presentation.
rigid adj-stiff & unbending After sitting too long, his legs felt rigid.
insistent adj-demanding that something should happen The child was insistent on getting a toy.
devoted adj-Showing strong commitment, loyalty, and dedication over a long period of time. He remained devoted to his goals despite challenges.
preserving v-Protecting something important so it is not lost, damaged, or forgotten. Preserving nature is important for future generations.
resembled v-Looked very similar to someone else. The painting resembled the real landscape.
relic n-A treasured object kept because it has strong emotional or historical importance. The museum displayed an ancient relic from the Roman Empire.
humanity n-Kindness, compassion, and belief in the goodness of people. Climate change is a challenge for all of humanity.
legacy n-What a person leaves behind that continues to influence others after their death. His work created a lasting legacy.
analyze v-to look closely at the small parts of a text to see how they work together and affect the whole. She carefully analyzed the data.
background information n-the (new) information that helps a reader better contextualize and understand a specific text. The article provides useful background information on the topic.
context n-encompasses a text, its speakers, its audience, its purposes, and the circumstances that surround the text, including the time period, and major historical, cultural, or literary events may impact the context. The context changed the meaning.
