Definitions of important terms

QuestionAnswer
expresses a complete thought sentence
composed of subject (noun/pronoun) and verb simple sentence
makes a statement, ends with a period declarative sentence
asks a question, ends with a question mark interrogative sentence
expresses surprise, disbelief, or deep feeling, ends with an exclamation point exclamatory sentence
gives a command or requests someone to do something, can end with a period or an exclamation point imperative sentence
names a person, place, thing, concept, quality, or activity noun
word used as a substitute for a noun (she) pronoun
tells what the subject is going to do or what happens to it verb
does not refer to a particular person, place, thing, concept, quality or activity and is not capitalized common noun
names a particular person, place, thing or activity and should always be capitalized proper noun
names of groups or collections (mob, crowd, committee, herd) collective noun
