Vocabulary WordPart of SpeechDefinition of That WordSentence Using Word
Archetype Noun A universal, recurring symbol, character type, setting, or plot pattern in literature that evokes a deep, instinctive response across cultures and time periods. This character is a good archetype because he teaches every culture a lesson.
Era Noun A distinct span of time in history defined by shared intellectual, artistic, cultural, or social characteristics in literature. There were 4 main eras in Earth's history.
Movement Noun A collective trend in literature where a group of authors, often within a specific timeframe or location, share common philosophies, artistic styles, themes, or goals. The civil rights movement was led by a number of activists throughout its time.
Historical Account Noun A narrative or record documenting past events, often focusing on accuracy, evidence, and chronological order. That man's historical account was made just to create a movie about him.
Position Noun An author's stance or relationship to the topic and audience. His position was a very strong one, considering he had amazing people skills and knew exactly what his book meant.
Coherent Adjective A logically organized piece of writing where ideas, sentences, and paragraphs connect clearly to create an easily understood whole. That essay was not coherent, as the two body paragraphs had nothing to do with each other.
Focus Noun The central controlling idea, theme, or topic that anchors a text, ensuring coherence by directing the audience’s attention to essential details. The main focus about Bob's essay was about increasing nutrition in students' diets,
Connotation Noun The emotional, cultural, or associative meanings attached to a word beyond its literal definition. I don't know what that means, but I do know that it has a positive connotation.
Curate Verb To select, organize, and present content, items, or artistic works, often using expert knowledge to provide context or a specific theme. The museum's job was to curate all the pieces of artwork, and they screwed that up too.
Text Feature Noun A component of a text that helps readers locate, understand, and organize information, particularly in non-fiction. For example, indexes, page numbers, headings, illustrations, and captions. The glossary was the only text feature I could not locate in this textbook.
Herded Verb Moved a group of people or animals in a particular direction. The farmer herded the sheep as they made their way back to the farm.
Sharp Adjective Highly intelligent, perceptive, and able to understand complex situations rapidly. The main character in Tommy's article was very sharp.
Boarded Verb Lived and ate at a location (often someone’s home) for payment. I saw people boarded at my neighbors house for the first time.
Drafted Verb Involuntarily and mandatorily enlisted into military service. During the Vietnam War, many Americans were drafted into the army.
Ignorant Adjective Lacking knowledge or awareness; uneducated or unsophisticated. The students were very ignorant, even when the highly knowledgeable professor taught them important life skills.
Flung Verb Threw with force. I flung the pickle out the window because I didn't like it, only to realize Mr. Pinnock was right behind me.
Catapulted Verb Launched forward with machine-like force. I catapulted the ping pong ball into the cup with my catapult.
Lurched Verb Staggered; moved unsteadily. I lurched left and right because of my intensifying sleepiness.
Struggling Verb Trying to do with difficulty. I was struggling with my social studies test and as I went through, it didn't get any better.
Impairments Noun Injury; damage. There were many impairments to that old, rusty car, which explained why the old man was selling it for only 10 dollars.
Frustrated Adjective Prevented from accomplishing. I was deeply frustrated with my math homework, as I never seemed to get the problem right.
Latin Prefix Co- Word using prefix: Correlation A mutual relationship or connection between two or more things. The graph showed a strong positive correlation.
Greek Prefix Arch- Word using prefix: Archipelago A group of islands. Hawaii is the biggest known archipelago in the United States.
