| Erythrocytes | Red Blood Cells |
| Leukocytes | White Blood Cells |
| Hemoglobin | An iron-rich protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues and returns carbon dioxide. |
| Aneurysm | A dangerous, abnormal bulge in an artery wall caused by weakened vessel tissue. |
| Phlebitis | The inflammation of a vein (Phleb = vein) |
| Fibrillation | A rapid, chaotic, and uncoordinated quivering of heart muscle fibers, caused by irregular electrical activity. |
| Leuk (prefix) | white or white blood cell |
| Leukemia | Cancer of the bone marrow characterized by an abnormal increase in white blood cells |
| Infarction | Necrosis caused by a sudden, severe lack of oxygen due to restricted blood supply |
| Pleura | Thin, two-layered serous membrane that encloses the lungs and lines the chest cavity. Function: creates surface tension to ensure lung expansion with the chest wall |
| Epistaxis (nosebleed) | Bleeding from the tissue lining the nose |
| Emphysema | A chronic, progressive lung disease that destroys alveoli, causing permanent enlargement of air spaces. |
| Meningeal | The three protective membranes - the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater - that surround and support the brain and spinal cord. |
| Cholecyst- | The gallbladder |
| -ectomy | Surgical removal of a body part |
| -sclerosis | Abnormal hardening of body tissue |
| -algia | Pain |
| -my or -myo | Muscle |
| Dys- | bad/difficult |
| -plasty | Surgical repair |
| -ostomy | Surgical opening in the abdomen |
| Coronary | Refers to the blood vessels that supply blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the heart muscle |
| Neutrophils | Acts as the immune system's primary defense against infections |
| Frontal Lobe | Executive functions (attention, control, and reasoning); personality, language, motor movements, and memory |
| Parietal Lobe | Processes sensory information: temperature, touch, pain, and pressure |
| Occipital Lobe | Center for visual processing, interpreting sensory inputs from eyes, and depth perception |
| Temporal Lobe | Responsible for processing auditory information, speech comprehension, and memory |
| Midbrain | Responsible for motor movement, specifically the eyes, and auditory/visual processing |
| Pons | Plays a role in sleep, consciousness, and facial movements |
| Medulla Oblongata | Responsible for breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure |
| Hypothalamus | Maintains body homeostasis by regulating vital functions |
| Thalamus | Sorts and sends data |
| Cerebellum | Coordinates voluntary movements, maintaining balance, posture, and motor learning/memory |
| Spinal Cord | Carries signals from the brain, carries information to the brain, and manages body reflexes |
| Amygdala | Processing center for emotions |
