Biology Vocab

TermDefinition
aquatic Aquatic describes anything relating to, living in, or growing in water, such as plants, animals, or habitats.
sequester To sequester means to isolate, segregate, or set apart a person, group, or property, often for legal, safety, or scientific reasons
indefinitely Indefinitely means for an unlimited, unknown, or unspecified period of time, often implying a situation may continue forever or until further notice.
secrete Secrete has two distinct meanings: to produce and release a substance (like fluids or hormones) from cells or glands, or to hide/conceal something in a secure place
dilute Dilute means to make a liquid thinner, weaker, or less concentrated by adding another substance (typically water or a solvent). It also metaphorically means to weaken the strength, force, or quality of something.
constraint A constraint is a limitation, restriction, or check that controls behavior, actions, or system performance, often defining boundaries for what is possible
criterion A criterion (plural: criteria) is a standard, rule, or test used to judge, evaluate, or make a decision about something.
carrying capacity (biological definition) Biological carrying capacity is the maximum population size of a species that a specific environment can sustainably support over the long term, determined by limited resources like food, water, and habitat.
correlation Correlation is a statistical measure expressing the strength and direction of a relationship between two or more variables, indicating how they change together.
causation Causation is the act, process, or agency by which a specific cause produces an effect, action, or consequence.
aesthetic Aesthetic (adjective/noun) refers to the appreciation, study, or philosophy of beauty, art, and taste.
stimulates To stimulate means to encourage something to grow, develop, or become more active.
regulates To regulate means to control, manage, or adjust a process, system, or behavior according to specific rules, standards, or principles.
tradeoff A trade-off is a situational decision involving a compromise, where one aspect, quality, or benefit is reduced or given up to gain a different, more desirable one.
biomass Biomass is renewable organic material derived from living or recently deceased organisms—primarily plants, animals, and waste—used as a source of energy or fuel.
mimic To mimic means to imitate, copy, or reproduce the speech, mannerisms, or appearance of someone or something, often for entertainment, ridicule, or to fit in.
facilitate Facilitate means to make an action, process, or goal easier, smoother, or less difficult.
