TermDefinition
deportation n. the act of expelling someone from a country; then, they were able to begin the deportation process.
detention n. the act of keeping someone in custody; "You have morning detention with Mr. Crotsley!"
fugitive n. a person who has escaped or is in hiding to avoid arrest; harboring a fugitive is a serious crime.
quarrels n. arguments, disagreements; Bob and Sally have had many quarrels.
Gestapo N. secret police force of Nazi Germany; I was worried it was the Gestapo at the door.
foreboding n. a sudden feeling that something bad is going to happen; I had a sudden sense of foreboding.
apprehension n. fear of what will happen next; I picked up the phone with a strong feeling of apprehension.
intuition n. the ability to see the truth in something immediately, without reasoning; I had a strong intuition to not get in the stranger's van.
mounting adj. increasing gradually; building up; the tension was mounting, as neither side wanted to back down.
rigid adj. stiff and unbending; the rigid frame of the model airplane began to take its shape as the artist worked on it.
insistent adj. demanding that something should happen; The stranger was insistent that I get in his van for free candy.
devoted adj. showing strong commitment, loyalty, and dedication over a long period of time; I was devoted to the good cause.
preserving v. protecting something important so it is not lost, damaged, or forgotten; I worked on preserving an old vase this week.
resembled v. looked very similar to someone else; he faintly resembled my brother with his long hair.
relic n. a treasured object kept because it has strong emotional or historical importance; museums usually have some ancient relics.
humanity n. kindness, compassion, and belief in the goodness of people; I believe everything should be done for the good of humanity.
legacy n. what a person leaves behind that continues to influence others after their death; we remember his legacy
analyse v. to look closely at the small parts of a text to see how they work together and affect the whole; analyse the meaning of the text now or else!
background information n. information that helps a reader better contextualize and understand a specific text; Most excerpts give background information to help you understand the story.
context n. encompasses a text, its speakers, its audience, its purposes, and the circumstances that surround the text; Reading a word in context can help you better understand it.
-ent suffix; state of being; quality; apparent; clearly visible or understood; obvious; It was apparent that he didn't understand the instructions.
-tion suffix; act of; preparation; act of getting ready for something; Preparation is the key to success.
co- prefix; together; cooperation; the process of working together to the same end; we require your cooperation.
-mit- root; to release; to send; commit; pledge or bind to a certain course or policy. You have to commit to clubs at the start of the school year.
