obstetric anatomy terms and abbrev.

| -gravida | pregnancy |
| nulligravida | a woman who has never been pregnant |
| primigravida/ unigravida | pregnant for the first time |
| multigravida | a woman who has been pregnant two or more times |
| puerperium | the 6-week time period immediately after delivery |
| umbilical cord | the tissue that connects the embryo to the placenta |
| antepartum | before childbirth |
| intrapartum | during childbirth |
| postpartum | after childbirth |
| neonate | newborn infant (less than 4 weeks old) |
| placenta | a highly vascular structure that acts as a physical communication between the mother and the embryo |
| first trimester | 0 to 14 weeks pregnant |
| second trimester | 14 to 28 weeks pregnant |
| third trimester | 28 weeks pregnant to delivery |
| young primipara | estimated date of delivery of first pregnancy before a woman's 16th birthday |
| elderly primipara | estimated date of delivery of first pregnancy after a woman's 35th birthday |
| grand multiparity | a woman who has delivered 5 or more children |
| parturition | the act of giving birth |
| parity | the number of times a woman has delivered a child |
| post-term pregnancy | from 40 to 42 completed weeks of pregnancy |
| prolonged pregnancy | over 42 weeks of pregnancy |
| CS | cesarean section |
| ECV | external cephalic version |
| hCG | human chorionic gonadotropin |
| HELLP | hemolytic elevated liver enzymes low platelet (count) |
| LGA | light for gestational age |
| LMP | last menstrual period |
| SGA | small for gestational age |
| TTTS | twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome |
| VBAC | vaginal birth after c-section |
| ASD | atrial septic defect |
| VSD | ventricular septic defect |
| EDD | estimated date of delivery |
| Apgar score | rates the physical health of the infant with a set of criteria assessed at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth |
