ELA Flashcards Unit 5 Vocabulary Words

Quarrels n. Arguments/Disagreements At one point me and my brother quarrelled, over something silly.
Gestapo n. Secret police force of Nazi Germany; known for their brutality. In 1933, the Gestapo were established as a secret police force.
Foreboding n. Sudden feeling that something bad is going to happen. She was filled with a sense of foreboding.
Apprehension n. Fearful feeling about what will happen next. The thought of moving to a new city fills me with apprehension.
Intuition n. Ability to see the truth of something immediately without reasoning. Intuition was telling him that something was very wrong.
Mounting adj. Increasing gradually; building up. She anticipated her trip abroad with mounting excitement.
Rigid adj. Stiff, and unbending. Several colleges in our study have rigid rules about student conduct.
Insistent adj. Demanding that something should happen. The child was insistent in his whining and eventually his father caved.
Deportation n. The act of expelling someone from a country. Several of the refugees detained at the border now face deportation.
Detention n. The act of keeping someone in custody. (ex. A political prisoner.) Because he was late for school, the student was kept in after-school detention.
Fugitive n. A person who has escaped or is in hiding to avoid arrest. He was a fugitive of the state now.
Devoted adj. Showing strong commitment, loyalty, and dedication over a long period of time. The actors were devoted to the play.
Preserving v. Protecting something important so it is not lost, damaged, or forgotten. The fossil was preserved over 100,00 years.
Resembled v. Looked very similar to someone else. The baby resembled his older siblings.
Relic n. A treasured object kept because it has strong emotional or historical importance. The tower is a relic of when big houses had to be fortified against invaders
Humanity n. Kindness, compassion, and belief in the goodness of people. We appealed to his sense of humanity
Legacy n. What a person leaves behind that continues to influence others after their death. Her artistic legacy lives on through her children.
Analyze v. to look closely at the small parts of a text to see how they work together and affect the whole. In class, we had to analyze the article.
Background Information n. the (new) information that helps a reader better contextualize and understand a specific text. The background information set the stage for the story to start.
Context n. encompasses a text, its speakers, its audience, its purposes, and the circumstances that surround the text, including the time period, and major historical, cultural, or literary events may impact the context. We need to look at the event within the larger context of world history.
Latin Suffix: -tion state of being; quality Word: Abduction n. He was charged with abduction after it was found he had taken a child.
Latin Suffix: -ent act of Word: Accident n. The car accident was all over the news.
Latin Prefix: co- together Word: Coding n. My uncle loves coding and does it as a hobby.
Latin Root: -mit- to release; to send Word: Emit v. Industries shouldn't emit black smoke due to air pollution
