Water Cycle 1.4

TermDefinition
What is transpiration? Evaporation from plants through the leaves. Water is absorbed by the roots of plants and then released through the leaves.
What is evapotranspiration? Evaporation + (plus) Transpiration = Evapotranspiration *The sum of evaporation from surface water (oceans, rivers lakes, streams, runoff, puddles etc.) plus transpiration from plants.
What is porosity? The amount of empty space in the underground substrate (rock. And other materials); this empty space is known as pore space. Porosity is how much water a substance can hold.
How can porosity affect surface flooding? Porosity of underground soil will determine how fast or slow water can move above AND below the surface of the land. If there is a lot of empty spaces in underground soil water will move more quickly, preventing surface flooding.
what material has a greater porosity: sand or gravel? Gravel because they are larger particles and leave bigger open spaces between them, allowing for more water to sit there. Sand is really small fine particles that are more compacted when together and leave very little openings for water to fit in.
What is turbidity? The measure of how clear a liquid (water) is. Turbidity makes water cloudy or opaque. Higher turbidity= darker water Lower turbidity= clearer water
How does turbid water affect marine ecosystems and an indicator of water quality? The darker water is, the harder it is for a marine ecosystem to thrive. Organisms living in turbid water are not as productive and cannot withstand the harsh water quality.. Turbid water is a sign of many pollutants.
What is Infiltration? The process of surface water changing into groundwater as it passes through soil.
What is surface tension? The elasticity or stretchiness of water molecules due to the tug-of-war between two forces. The surface tension of water and the pressure of the air pushing up against the bottom of it.
Do you think surface tension would help prevent (stop) flooding? Explain. Yes, because water does not hold a specific shape and is flexible to move. Water molecules will attach to each other and will hold together until they are too big; at which point they will break up again into smaller droplets.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
