Inorganic Compound A substance that doesn't contain carbon and hydrogen
Organic Compound A substance that contains carbon and hydrogen
Solution A solvent that dissolves a substance called a solute. This type of mixture is homogeneous
Colloid Mixture where the solute particles are in small compounds thick enough to make the mixture opaque. Think milk and cream
Suspension A mixture where a heavier substance temporarily floats in a liquid, but settles after some time
Acid A substance that releases hydrogen ions
Base A substance that releases hydroxyl ions, or one that accepts hydrogen ions already present
pH The negative, base ten logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration of the solution. Scales one order of magnitude per point, in a scale of 1-14. The lower, the more acidic
Buffer A solution of weak acid and its conjugate base. Can neutralize a small amount of acid or bases in the body
