| rotation | the spin of a body on its axis. |
| day | the time it takes Earth to rotate once on its axis. |
| revolution | the motion of a body that travels around another body in space; one complete orbit. |
| year | the time it takes Earth to complete one revolution around the Sun. |
| season | a division of the year with recurring weather conditions, caused by Earth’s tilt and its position in orbit. |
| equinox | the time when day and night are about equal in length. |
| solstice | the point when the Sun is farthest north or south of the equator. |
| satellite | a natural or artificial body that revolves around a planet. |
| gravity | a force of attraction between objects due to their masses. |
| lunar phases | the different appearances of the Moon as seen from Earth throughout the month. |
| eclipse | an event in which the shadow of one celestial body falls on another. |
| umbra | the darkest part of a shadow where light is completely blocked. |
| penumbra | the outer part of a shadow where light is only partially blocked. |
| tide | the periodic rise and fall of ocean water levels. |
| tidal range | the difference between high tide and low tide. |
| spring tide | a tide with the greatest range, occurring during new and full moons. |
| neap tide | a tide with the smallest range, occurring during the first and third quarter moons. |
