Demonstration n. – a public exhibition of the attitude of a group toward a controversial issue made by picketing, parading, etc.
Protest n., v. – an expression or declaration of objection, disapproval, or dissent
Picket v. – to patrol a place of work affected by a strike in order to discourage its patronage and to make public the worker’s grievances.
Boycott n., v. – to abstain from buying or using
Sit-in n. – an organized, passive protest, esp. against racial segregation, in which the demonstrators occupy seats prohibited to them, as in restaurants
Segregate v. – to require, often with force, the separation of a specific racial, religious, or other group from the general body of society
Discrimination n. – treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person based on the group, class, or category to which that person belongs rather than on individual merit
Sonic Boom n. – the loud noise produced by a vehicle when it travels faster than the speed of sound and breaks through the sound barrier
Trespassing n. – a wrongful entry upon the lands of another
Whirlpool n. – water in swift, circular motion, as that produced by the meeting of opposing currents, often causing a downward spiraling action
Wring v. – to twist and compress, or compress without twisting, so as to force out water or other liquid
Seniority n. – the condition or fact of being older; superiority in age or standing
Eavesdrop v. – to listen secretly to a private conversation
Maestro n. – the conductor or leader of a musical performance
Pinnacle n. – the highest point
Conscience n. – knowledge of right and wrong and a feeling that one should do what is right
Welfare n. – a program where financial or other aid is provided by the government to people in need
Traitor n. – somebody who behaves in a disloyal or treacherous manner
Punctual adj. – arriving at an appointed time or at a regularly scheduled time
Emulate v. – to try to be like or better than
Intimidate v. – to make timid or fearful by or as if by threats
Hostile adj. - showing open resistance or opposition; unfriendly
Juvenile Delinquent n. – a minor who cannot be controlled by parents and who violates the law (vandalism or stealing)
Generate v. – to bring into existence; cause to be; produce
Thermostat n. – a device that automatically controls temperature
