TermDefinition
FOURTEEN POINTS — A plan made by President Woodrow Wilson after World War I that listed ideas for how countries could stop fighting and keep peace
GREAT MIGRATION — The movement of many African American families from the southern United States to northern cities in the early 1900s, looking for better jobs, safer communities, and more opportunities.
LEAGUE OF NATIONS — An international group created after World War I where countries could talk about problems and try to solve them peacefully so wars would be less likely. The United States did not join, but many other countries did.
RED SCARE — A time after World War I when many people in the United States were afraid of communism and radical political ideas spreading. This fear caused suspicion and sometimes unfair treatment of people thought to have those beliefs.
PALMER RAIDS — Government actions in the United States after World War I where officials arrested and questioned many people suspected of being radicals or foreign revolutionaries.
REPARATIONS — Money and resources that a country must pay or give to other countries after a war to help fix damage and losses. After World War I, some nations were required to pay reparations, which caused economic strain for them.
TREATY OF VERSAILLES — The official agreement that ended World War I. It set new country borders and rules for punished nations. Some parts of the treaty were hard for the losing countries, which caused anger and problems later.
