Bio Genetics
Test
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Meiosis | Process where an organism makes sex cells- Results in cells with half the number of normal chromosomes |
| Genetics | The branch of biology that studies heradity |
| Genotype | The alleles an organism has (letter) |
| Phenotype | The way the organism looks or behaves due to the genotype they possess (physical trait) |
| Heterozygous | When there are 2 different alleles of a gene- one inherited from each parent |
| Homozygous | When there are 2 identical alleles of a gene- both are inherited from the parents, resulting in a consistent genotype |
| Polygenic inheritance | When one trait is controlled by 2 or more genes- Ex: Eye or skin color in humans, coat colors in labradors |
| Incomplete dominance | When traits are neither dominant not recessive (instead they blend together) |
| Codominance | When neither allele are dominant over the other, so they both get expressed |
| Mitosis | End product is 2 identical daughter cells-creates body cells- purpose is growth and development |
| Meiosis | End product is 4 unique daughter cells (sperm or egg)- creates sex cells- purpose is sexual reproduction- crossing over occurs |
| Meiosis and mitosis | Undergo DNA replication- create new cells- occur in plant and animal cells |
| Why is it almost impossible to have a male calico cat? | Because the calico pattern requires 2 X chromosomes and males normally only have one (XY) |
