Brainstorming First step or beginning strategy to help start the research process.
Periodical A magazine or newspaper published at regular intervals.
What if your database search did not pull up the results you hoped? Brainstorm a list of synonyms for your topic or word. Look for other key words.
What type of sources would you anticipate finding in the online MSU catalog? Full-text articles from academic journals, magazines, and newspapers.
What is Electronic Media? Examples include: television, radio, telephone, desktop computer, game console, handheld device, cd, dvd, ebooks.
What is a catalog? A complete list of items, typically one in alphabetical or other systematic order.
What is not an appropriate research tool for credible information and academic writing? Facebook and other social media.
What information about a source is found in the online MSU record? Location of the source, type of source (print or ebook, journal, dvd, etc.), copyright data.
Interlibrary Loan The process of borrowing materials through one library that belong to another library.
What are credentials? Qualifications.
What is credibility? The quality of being believable or trustworthy.
What is expertise? Specialized knowledge or skill.
What are examples of URL suffixes? .Edu, .org, .net, .com, .gov.
What are NOT reliable evaluation methods in determining online resource credibility? Trusting the website developer, or that the source has a recent publication/copyright date.
Peer Reviewed The evaluation of a professional colleague's work or designation of an academic journal that indicated that the articles have been approved by experts in the field.
Ways to search up-to-date magazine articles? CCL online catalog, magazine websites, online databases.
What strategies are LEAST likely to result in a focused search. (quality not quantity)? Random database searching.
What strategies are LIKELY to result in a focused search. (quality not quantity)? Limiting search by date(s), refining or limiting subject, and identifying other key words.
Subject Specific Encyclopedias Excellent for quickly retrieving background information on a research topic.
What are online catalogs, Academic Search Complete Database, and Google Scholars not helpful? Not as helpful in quickly accessing background information on a topic.
In what manner are the books in the main collection at CCL organized by? By subject.

Paraphrase Express the meaning of (the writer or speaker or something written or spoken) using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.
Common Knowledge Facts that can be found in many --at least three-- independent sources and are known by a lot of people or shared beliefs or assumptions.
Citation A written reference to a specific work (book, article, dissertation, report, musical composition, etc.) by a particular author or creator which identifies the document in which the work may be found.
True or False: Paraphrased information from a source does not need to be cited. False.

Call Number A number used in libraries to classify books and periodicals and to indicate where they can be found on the shelves. For example: 796.3 ALL.
Where would you look for the MOST up-to-date information about a breaking topic? CREDIBLE website updated within hours.
Where would you NOT look for the most up-to-date information about a breaking topic? Electronic book, Online journal updated monthly, Google Blog.
While researching a topic online you realize ALL the sources are taking the same position and citing the same individual. What conclusion can you draw? The information is biased you need to rephrase your research question/keywords, or you need to expand your search.
True or False: When the source you used is out of copyright (older than 75 years), you do not have to cite it. False.
True or False: When the author has granted you permission to borrow material, it is not necessary to cite it. False.
True or False: When the source has been referred to and cited multiple times since publication, it is unnecessary to cite it in your writing. False.
What early step will help you focus your research process? Determine what you know or want to know about the topic to determine a research question.
