earthquake

| convergent | A zone where tectonic plates collide, often causing one plate to subduct, which creates intense seismic activity. |
| earthquake | The shaking of the earth's surface caused by the sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust. |
| epicenter | A fracture or zone of weakness in rock along which movement occurs, causing an earthquake. |
| fault | The point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus (hypocenter) where an earthquake originates. |
| seismic wave | Energy waves that travel through the ground, vibrating it, causing earthquakes. |
| seismogram | The sensor (instrument) that measures and detects ground vibrations. |
| seismometer | A complete instrument system that records the vibrations detected by a seismometer. |
