what is the central nervous system (CNS)? brain & spinal cord
what is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)? sensory receptors & nerves
what is the sensory (afferent) division of the PNS? transmits action potentials from receptors to CNS
what are sensory receptors? neuron endings /specialized cells that detedt stimuli and send input along nerves to brain & spinal cord
what is the motor (efferent) division of the PNS? transmits action potentials from CNS to effectors (ex: muscles & glands)
what is the somatic nervous system of the motor division? carries signals from CNS to skeletal muscles
is the somatic nervous system voluntary or involuntary? voluntary
how many neurons are involved in the somatic nervous system pathway? single neuron system
what is the autonomic nervous system (ANS) of the motor division? carries signals from CNS to smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and some glands
is the ANS voluntary or involuntary? involuntary
how many neurons are involved in the ANS pathway? 2 neuron system (1 from CNS to ganglion & 1 form ganglion to effector)
what is the function of the sympathetic division of the ANS? "fight or flight," prepares body for physical activity
what is the function of the parasympathetic division of the ANS? regulates resting functions (ex: digestion + emptying urinary bladder)
what is the enteric division of the ANS? plexuses within the wall of digestive tract
