what are the 2 main cell types in nervous tissue? neurons & glial cells
what is a nerve? a bundle of axons outside the brain and spinal cord
what are cranial nerves? nerves that come from brain; there are 12 pair
what are spinal nerves? nerves that come from spinal cord; there are 31 pairs
what is a ganglion? group of neuron cell bodies outside brain & spinal cord
what is a plexus? network of axons, sometimes cell bodies, outside of CNS
what are glial cells? supportive cells in nervous system with lots of funcitons
what is the role of the nervous system in maintaining homeostasis? regulates & coordinates activites to maintain balance
what does it mean that the nervous system receives sensory input? monitors internal & external stimuli
what is meant by integrating information? brain + spinal cord process sensory input then initiate responses
how does the nervous system control muscles & glands? sends signals that regualte their activity
what role does the nervous system play in mental activity? establishes and maintains consciousness, thinking, memory, and emotion
functions of the nervous system? maintaining homeostasis, receiving sensory input, integrating info, controlling muscle & glands, establish + maintain mental activity
