TermDefinition
rotation circular movement of an object around a center of rotation
day a division of time equal to 24 hours and representing the average length of the period during which the earth makes one rotation on its axis.
revolution Revolution, on the other hand, is the earth's orbital motion around the Sun, which takes 365 and 1/4 days to complete.
year the time taken by the earth to make one revolution around the sun.
season A season is a division of the year based on changes in weather, ecology, and the number of daylight hours in a given region.
equinox two times of the year when the Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, resulting in a "nearly" equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes.
solstice the point where the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest point in the sky for the year
satellite The Short Answer: A satellite is anything that orbits a planet or a star. Earth is a satellite orbiting the Sun. The Moon is a satellite orbiting Earth.

umbra the umbra is that region of space where an observer sees the one body block the other's light completely.
penumbra The outer part of a shadow such as the shadow cast by Earth or moon in which the sunlight is blocked out.
tide A tide is the regular, periodic rise and fall of the sea level caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and sun, typically occurring twice daily
tidal range Tides and their formation | Maritime Economics SA Grade 10A tidal range is the vertical difference in height between the water level at high tide and the following low tide.
spring tide A spring tide is a high-amplitude tide occurring twice monthly during new and full moons, when the Earth, Sun, and Moon align, causing maximum gravitational pull.
neap tide A neap tide is a period of moderate, low-range tides occurring twice a month, seven days after a spring tide, when the sun and moon are at right angles (quadrature) to the Earth.
