QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between a LAN and a WAN? (Choose 2) LANs have no cost; WANs have fees LANs are smaller in scope; WANs are larger in scope LANs are done by Internet Providers, WANs are done by home users LANs are smaller in scope; WANs are larger in scope LANs have no cost; WANs have fees
Private WANs are dedicated for multiple customers True or false? True
WANs are implemented using what logical topology designs? • Point-to-Point Topology • Hub-and-Spoke Topology • Dual-homed Topology • Fully Meshed Topology • Partially Meshed Topology
Point To Point Topology does what? Employs a point-to-point circuit between two endpoints and impementing a layer 2 transport service each network.
Dual-homed Topology A dual-homed topology provides redundancy. Two hub routers are dual-homed and redundantly attached to three spoke routers across a WAN cloud.
Networks Grow into what networks? Small Network Campus Network Branch Network Distributed Network
Fully and Partially Meshed Topologies are different in what way? Number of connections needed
WAN connections are based on a Carrier
What WAN carrier connection type is usable? Dual or single carrier WAN
TIA and EIA stands for Telecommunications Industry Association and Electronic Industries Alliance
ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization
IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
What layers are focused by WAN standards? OSI Layers 1 and 2
Layer 1 protocols include: SDH, SONET and DWDM
SDH, SONET and DWDM stands for? Synchronous Digital Hierarchy Synchronous Optical Networking Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing
What is the use of DCE DCE is used for provider communication and provide interface for subscribers across the WAN cloud
What is CPE? Customer Premises Equipment includes the DCE and DTE devices located on the enterprise, including subscriber relations with the service provider.
Layer 2 Protocols do what? Defines how data will be encapsulated. i.e PPP, HDLC protocols.
What is the use of DTE This is the device that connects the subscriber LANs to the WAN communication device (i.e., DCE).
What is the Point of Presence? Points where the subscriber connects to the service provider network.
What is the demarcation point? Location where separation of CPE from service provider equipment
What is the local loop/ last mile? Actual cables connecting the CPE to the Central office (CO)
What is the Central Office Local service provider facility or building that connects CPE to the provider
What is the Backhaul network Connects access nodes of the service provider network.
What are the types of toll network? This includes backhaul, long-haul, all-digital, fiber-optic communications lines, switches, routers, and other equipment inside the WAN provider network.
What is the Backbone network Large, high-capacity networks used to interconnect service provider networks and to create a redundant network.
Voiceband Modem is also known as Also known as dial-up modem.
DSL Modem and Cable Modems are referred to as: Broadband Modems, connected to the DTE via ethernet
What does CSU and DSU mean? Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit
Wan Core Devices are Consisted of Multiple High Speed Routers and Layer 3 Switches.
Network communication can be implemented using circuit-switched communication. (True/False) True
A landline describes a telephone situated in a flexible location that is connected to the provider using copper or fiber-optic media. False
What does PSTN and ISDN mean? Public Service Telephone Network and Integrated Services Digital Network
Frame Relay Is a simple Layer 2 non-broadcast multi-access (NBMA) WAN technology that is used to interconnect enterprise LANs.
What is ATM? Asynchronous Transfer Mode. Allows transferring voice, video, and data through private and public networks.
What are the Modern Wan Types? Dedoicated Broadband Packet Switched Internet-Based
Ethernet Wan is also known as •Metropolitan Ethernet (Metro E) • Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) • Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS)
What are the benefits of ethernet wan? Reduced Expenses Easier Integration Better Business Productivity
ISPs use what as layer 2 protocol? PPP (point to point protocol)
Cable technology is a high-speed always-on connection technology that uses a coaxial cable from the satellite company to provide IP services to users False
Optical Fiber goes by Fiber to the x too. True
There is 4 types of Internet Based Broadband. True. (Municipal Wifi, Cellular, Satelite and Wimax)
