Poetry Test

Poetry flashcards for the upcoming test in English.

TermDefinition
Rhyme Repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds.
Rhyme Scheme A pattern formed by the rhyming words at the end of the line.
Rhythm The pattern of unstressed and stressed syllables in lines of poetry.
Meter A regular pattern
Simile A comparison using "like" or "as" Ex "He is as sharp as a pencil"
Metaphor A comparison between two unlike things without using "like" or "as" Ex. "Our class is like a zoo"
Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds in the beginning of words. Ex. "Allison Aker"
Onomatopoeia Words that intimate sounds Ex.. "Buzz"
Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration "This bag weighs a ton"
Personification Giving nonliving things human characteristics. Ex "The tree danced in the wind"
Allusion A well-known reference Ex. "Google"
Sound Device elements in poetry used to create specific sounds when the poem is read aloud
Consonance The repetition of consonant sounds in the middle and end of words... Ex." Little Bats in the attic"
Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds in words. Ex."Dreams of bees and sheep"
Narrative Poem that tells a story
Haiku About Nature; follows the 5 7 5 rule
Free Verse/ Open Form No structure,rhyme, or pattern
Lyric Expresses thoughts and feelings of a single speaker
Ballads Song like poems that tells stories
Concrete A poem that is shaped to look like the subject. Ex. A softball poem shaped in a softball
Limerick 5 line rhyming poem that is humorous
