| Natural resource | Something on Earth that living things use to meet their needs. |
| Ores | Deposits of minerals that are large enough to be mined for a profit. |
| Renewable resources | Resources that can be replaced by natural processes in a relatively short amount of time. |
| Nonrenewable resources | Natural resources that are being used up faster than they can be replaced by natural processes. |
| Subduction zones | Areas where one tectonic plate sinks beneath. |
| Soil | The loose weathered material in which plants grow. |
| Porosity | The amount of pore space in a material. |
| Permeability | The measure of water's ability to flow through sediment and rock. |
| Mining | The process by which commercially valuable resources are removed from Earth. |
| Groundwater overdraft | Ground water being withdrawn from aquifers faster than natural recharge can replace it. |
