QuestionAnswer
What is character displacement? With Example A change in anatomy or niche when competiton is intense (birds beaks) (iguana land & marine)
What is community? All living organisms in an area
What is competition? Struggle between organisms for the same limited resources.
When does competition occur? When populations are using limited resources population increases, resources decline.
How may competition be reduced? only part only part of a resource is used, resource partiting. Species do not require same food source.
What is competive exclusion? No two species can occupy the same niche at the same time and place.
Explain a disturbance and give an example. An event that changes resource availiablity. Flood Fire
What an ectoparasite? Give example Live on the outside of the body of a host. Tick, Flea, mosquito, leech
What is an endoparasites? Lives on the inside of a host. Bacteria, tapeworms
Explain mimicry and give an example. One organism resembles another that is dangerous or poisonous,Snake King and COral, Butterfly monarch and viceroy
What is a pioneer species? What is a good example? Species that is first to colonize an area. Lichen fast spreading and withstands harsh conditions.
What is predation? Predator/prey relationships
What is Predator? hunts, captures eats,
What is prey hunted, captured, eaten
What are some adaptations predators use? Fangs, claws, stingers, poison
What are some adaptations prey use? Mimicry, colors, camoflauge
What is succession? Gradual regrowth after a disturbamce
Primary sucession and when does it take place? Previously had NO life
Secondary succession and when doe sit take place? growth after a disturbance , was growth before, soil is intact
What is the stable end point of sucession? Climax community
What are resources? Required for the basic survival- food, water, space, sunlight
Explain resource partitioning and why it occurs. process where similar species minimize competition by utilizing different resources, occupying unique niches, or feeding at different times/locations. Allows coexistence between competing species
What is symbiosis? a close, permanet relationship that exists between 3 different organisms
