Limiting Factor environmental factors which determine the types and number of organisms of a species in an ecosystem.
Competition the struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources
carrying capacity Largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support
cooperation organisms working together to benefit each other
Adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce
Symbiosis A close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species.
Mutualism A relationship between two species in which both species benefit
Commensalism A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected
Parasitism A relationship between two organisms of different species where one benefits and the other is harmed
predator An animal that hunts other animals for food
prey An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
ecological succession process by which one community replaces another community because of changing abiotic and biotic factors
primary succussion when ecological succession begins in an area with bare rock (no topsoil). Examples include volcano and glacier movement
secondary succession Succession following a disturbance that destroys a community without destroying the soil. Examples include fire and hurricane
pioneer species First species to populate an area during primary succession. Typically lichen or some mosses
climax community A stable, mature community that undergoes little or no change in species over time
