What does M.A.I.N. stand for? Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism
What is Imperialism? Countries taking control of other land
What are Alliances? Agreements between countries to support each other
What is Nationalism? Pride in your nation
What is Militarism? Building up a strong military
What event was the “spark” of WWI? Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated
What two alliance groups fought in WWI? Central and Allied Powers
What did the Central Powers want during WWI? To challenge the balance of power in Europe
What did the Allied Powers want during WWI? To keep balance of power in Europe
Which alliance group was the United States apart of? Allied Powers
What year did WWI begin and when did the U.S. join? 1914 and 1917
Why did the U.S. stay neutral at first? To avoid problems with other nations and focus on its own country
What was the League of Nations? International organization created after WWI to keep peace and stop future wars.
What is a U-boat and what was it used for? A German submarine used for submarine warfare
What did the Treaty of Versailles do? Officially ended WWI
What was the Lusitania? A British passenger ship sunk by Germany
What events caused the U.S. to join WWI? The American public was very angry about the Lusitania, Submarine warfare, and the Zimmerman Telegram
What was the Zimmermann Telegram? A war message sent by Germany to Mexico
Who was Alvin York and what did he do? A soldier who won the Medal of Honor during WWI
Who was Eddie Rickenbacker? A pilot who won the Medal of Honor during WWI
Who were the Harlem Hellfighters? African American soldiers
What role did women play in WWI? Worked and helped keep the country running while soldiers were at war
What was “No Man’s Land”? Space between trenches that was very dangerous
What is trench warfare? Soldiers fighting in trenches
What is an armistice? A agreement to stop fighting
