| cystolcele | abnormal protrusion of the urinary bladder into the wall of the vagina |
| cystolith | stone that has formed or lodged in the bladdder |
| diuresis | an increase in urine production and excretion |
| dysuria | condition of difficulty or pain with urination |
| functional incontinence | type of incontinence which the bladder functions properly, but urine loss is caused by environmental, cognitive, or physical reasons |
| glomerulonephritis | inflammation of the glomeruli, spilling blood and protein over into the urine |
| hematuria | blood or blood cells in the urine |
| hydronephrosis | swelling of one or both kidneys due to urine buildup from urinary tract obstruction |
| interstitial cystitis | chronic condition that causes bladder pressure and pain, pelvic pain, and frequent urination |
| kidney failure | stage of kidney disease at which the patient cannot survive without kidney dialysis or kidney transplant |
| mixed incontinence | type of incontinence in which there are symptoms of both urge and stress incontinence |
| nephritis | inflammation of the kidney |
| nephrolithiasis | condition of having stones form when urine crystallizes in the kidneys; also called kidney stones |
| nephrologist | medical doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions of the kidneys |

| pyelonephritis | inflammation of the kidney and renal pelvis |
| renal cell carcinoma | type of cancer that begins in the cells of the kidney |
| renal colic | moderate to severe pain that is usually caused by the passage of a kidney stone |
| renovascular hypertension | condition in which a blockage of arteries in kidneys causes high blood pressure |
| stress incontinence | type of incontinence in which there is urine leakage associated with physical pressure; coughing, laughing, jumping or sneezing |
| stricture | abnormal narrowing of a structure in the body; urinary system, a narrowing of the urethra or ureter affecting the glow of urine |
| uremia | collection of waste products in the blood; usually associated with kidney failure |
| urinary incontinence | general term for inability to control the bladder, which leads to an involuntary loss of urine |
| urinary obstruction | partial or complete blockage of urine passage caused by physical condition/abnormality, illness, or injury |
| urinary retention | condition in which the bladder is not fully emptied during urination |
| urinary tract infection | bacterial infection of the urethra, bladder, ureter, or kidney that results in painful burning during urination and frequent feeling of needing to pee |
| urogynecologist | medical doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions of the female reproductive system and urinary system |
| urologist | medical doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions of the urinary system and the male reproductive system |
| urology | medical specialty related to the diagnosis and treatment of urinary system and male reproductive system conditions |
| Wilms tumor | fast-growing cancerous tumor of the kidney most commonly seen in children; also known as nephroblastoma |
| 24 hour urine specimen | urine specimen consisting of all urine voided in a 24 hr period |
| automated peritoneal dialysis | type of peritoneal dialysis in which a machine is used to deliver and remove the dialysis fluid, usually while the patient sleeps |
| bladder scanning | scan that uses a handheld ultrasound device placed on a patient's abdomen to measure the amount of urine in the bladder |
| blood urea nitrogen | a laboratory test to measure kidney function by measuring the amount of urea in the blood |
| clean-catch specimen | urine specimen that does not include the first and last urine voided |
| continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis | machine-free type of peritoneal dialysis that can be done while continuing normal activities |
| creatinine clearance test | test performed to measure kidney function; the amount of creatinine, waste product, in a 24- hr urine specimen is measured and compared to the amount of creatinine in the blood |
| culture and sensitivity | test performed on a specimen to identify microorganisms present and to aid in antibiotic selection |
| cystectomy | surgical removal of the bladder |
| cystoscopy | examination of the bladder using a cystoscope, or thin tube with a light and video camera, inserted through the urethra |
| cystostomy | surgical creation of an opening into the bladder through the abdominal wall |
| dialysis | an artificial means of removing the body's waste products when the kidneys are no longer able to function properly; there are two types; hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis |
| diurectic | medication that increases urinary output; may be used to treat hypertension, heart failure, edema, kidney disease, and other conditions |
| estimated glomerular filtration rate | blood test that estimates the rate at which the glomeruli are filtering blood an important indicator of kidney health. |
| first void specimen | urine specimen collected when the patient first urinates (voids) in the morning |
| hemodialysis | form of kidney dialysis in which blood is removed from the body and passed through a machine that removes waste |
| indwelling catheter | type of urinary catheter that remains inside the bladder for a period of time |
| intake and output | measurement of all fluids taken in and eliminated |
| intravenous pyelogram | xray of the ureter and renal pelvis enhanced by use of an intravenous contrast dye |
| kidneys, ureters, bladder x-ray | x-ray taken of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder |
| kidney transplant | procedure to surgically implant a healthy kidney from a donor in a patient whose kidneys do not function properly |
| lithotripsy | procedure that uses sound waves to break up kidney stones |
| nephrectomy | surgical removal of a kidney |
| nephrostomy | surgical creation of an opening from the renal pelvis to the outside of the body |
| percutaneous nephrolithotomy | procedure that removes kidney stones from the body that are too large to pass on their own or remove with lithotripsy; small incision made in the flank to remove the stones |
| peritoneal dialysis | form of kidney dialysis in which a solution is instilled in the abdomen through a catheter and the lining of the peritoneum filters the blood |
| ph level test | test that may be performed with a reagent strip to measure potential of hydrogen, or how acidic or alkaline a fluid is on a scale from 0 (acidic) to 14 (basic) |
| routine urine specimen | urine specimen that can be collected any time the patient voids |
| specific gravity test | test that may be performed with a reagent strip to measure the density of urine as compare to water |
| straight catheter | type of urinary catheter that does not remain inside the person |
| suprapubic catheter | a catheter that is inserted through the skin into the bladder, above the pubic bone, to drain urine from the bladder |
| ureteroscopy | examination of the ureter or kidney using a ureteroscope, or a thing tube with light and video camera inserted through the urethra and advanced toward the kidney |
| ureterostomy | surgically created opening from a ureter to the abdomen that allows urine to be eliminated |
| urinalysis | a laboratory test to analyze urine |
| urinary cahteterization | procedure in which a thing tube is inserted into the bladder to drain urine |
