Food Chain The transfer of food energy from organisms in one nutritional level to those in another
Food Web A complex and interlocking series of food chains showing the movement of energy and nutrients
Trophic Levels The feeding positions of all organisms in a specific ecosystem
Primary Producer Organisms that make their own food using in-organic materials and energy sources, such as sunlight, aka autotrophs
Primary Consumer Herbivores, or organisms that only eat plants and algae
Secondary Consumer A specialized type of carnivore that feeds on primary consumers or herbivores
Tertiary Consumer Includes carnivores and omnivores which eat the animals that belong to the third level
Apex Predator Animals on top of the food chain which have no predators of their own. These predators help to maintain sustainable population levels.
Generalist Species Generalists eat a variety of foods and thrive in a range of habitats
Specialist Species Specialists only eat certain foods and require specific habitat requirements
Keystone Species A keystone species is an organism that defines and holds an ecosystem together
Ecosystem Engineer Species that create, modify, and maintain the landscape around them. They define the overall biodiversity of their environment.
Mutualist/Mutualism Mutualists are two or more species that engage reciprocally, each benefitting from the relationship
Endemic Species Organisms that only exist in one geographic region
