| Hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| Idiom | an expression that does not mean what is literally said |
| Similes | comparing two things using like or as |
| Alliteration | the initial repetition of letter sounds at the beginning of each word in a sentence |
| Personification | giving human qualities to nonhuman things |
| Metaphor | comparing two things by saying one thing is another thing |
| Onomatopoeia | words that sound like the sound they make |
| Allusion | a call to something without mentioning it explicitly |
| pun | a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings. |
| irony | the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. |
| oxymoron | a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g. faith unfaithful kept him falsely true ) |
| Hyperbole example | I'm so hungry I could eat a horse |
| Idiom example | it's raining cats and dogs |
| simile example | Ms. Stull is as busy as a bee |
| Alliteration example | sally sells sea shells by the sea shore |
| personification example | the leaves danced in the wind as they fell from the trees |
| metaphor example | My brother is a couch potato |
| onomatopoeia | the thunder cracked in the sky |
| allusion | chocolate is my kryptonite |
| pun example | "The tallest building in town is the library 一 it has thousands of stories." |
| irony example | the fire station burned down |
| oxymoron example | controlled chaos |
