Elements of Fiction

| point of view | The perspective of the narrator in a fictional story |
| narrator | the person telling the story |
| first person | the story is told from the main character's POV |
| second person | the story is told to the audience directly from the narrator |
| third person limited | the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of one character |
| third person omniscient | the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all characters |
| Characters | the people or animals in a fictional story |
| Direct Characterization | the author tells you directly what the character is like |
| indirect characterization | the author shows you what the charater is like through their actions, words and choices |
| protagonist | the main character |
| antagonist | the person or thing that causes problems for the main character |
| dynamic character | the characters personality changes over time |
| static character | the character does not change over time |
| conflict | the problem in a story |
| character vs character | the character has an issue or problem with another character or group of characters |
| character vs nature | the character has an issue or problem with something happening in nature |
| character vs society | the character has an issue or problem with something that is happening with the community or world |
| character vs self | the character has an issue or problem within his or her own mind and/or heart |
| setting | when, where, and the environment in which a story takes place |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| exposition | the beginning of the story where the reader is introduced to the setting, characters, and inciting incident |
| inciting incident | when the problem is introduced in a story |
| rising action | the conflict is introduced, tension builds, and events unfold, leading towards the climax |
| climax | the turning point in the story, the point of greatest suspense and interest where the central conflict is often resolved |
| falling action | the aftermath of the climax, where the story begins to wrap up |
| resolution | how the story ends |
| Theme | the lesson, message, or moral in a story the author wants the reader to learn |
