Down Syndrome

Social, Behavioural and Communication factors

Are behavioural challenges inherent in individuals with Down Syndrome? No. Behavioural challenges often occur when an individuals environment exceeds their expressive and receptive abilities.
Is Routine important ? Yes. Individuals have a strong preference for routine and predictability. Disruptions to routine may cause distress or behavioural outbursts
Why might individuals with Down Syndrome display non-compliance or stubborn behaviour? Non-compliance may occur as a way to assert independence or communicate frustration when they struggle to express their needs.
Social personality traits commonly observed in individuals with Down Syndrome Individuals have a desire for social interactions, friendliness, affection, empathy.
How can language delays influence social behaviour in individuals with Down Syndrome? Language delays and slower cognitive processing can lead to frustration, reduced attention, or anxiety, particularly in unfamiliar or demanding environments.
How does emotional sensitivity affect individuals with Down Syndrome? Many individuals are emotionally sensitive and can be strongly affected by the emotions of people around them such as their friends or family.
What behavioural challenges related to attention are common with Down Syndrome? Short attention spans and impulsive behaviour are common behavioural challenges.
Why can transitioning between environment or activities be challenging ? Transitioning can be challenging due to a preference for routine and difficulties adjusting to change.
What mental health conditions may occur in individuals with Down Syndrome? Depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive behaviours.
How can Down Syndrome affect peer interaction in children? Children are often social but can struggle interacting with others.
What types of activities support social development in individuals with Down Syndrome? Group activities such as sports, music, or dance.
Social goals adults with Down Syndrome often have. Adults often seek independence, friendships, and sometimes intimate relationships.
When communicating, individuals with down syndrome often understand information well (receptive language), but they can struggle with what ? Speaking (Expressive language)
