metaphor figurative language that is a DIRECT comparison between two things.
onomatopoeia type of figurative language that involves using words that mimic sounds.
symbolism when a writer creates a symbol (which could be an object, image, color, character, etc.) by giving something that is concrete a greater, more abstract meaning
idiom phrase that has a figurative meaning and cannot be understood by the literal meaning of its separate words
