The study of trait variation in different populations
| Term | Definition |

| Species | A group of organisms that are physically similar and can reproduce with each other to produce offspring. |
| Population | A group of organisms of a species living in the same environment over time. |
| Trait | A characteristic of an organism; many traits are inherited (genetic). |
| Environmental Conditions | Variables in the environment such as food and water availability, water quality, temperature, air quality, topography, habitat, and natural hazards. |
| Probability | The chances or likelihood that something will happen. |
| descendant species | a more recent species that evolved from an ancestor population |
| common ancestor population | an older population from which two or more newer species descended |
