| Counterclaim | When you consider a possible argument against your thesis or reasoning |
| SOAPSTONE | Speaker Occasion Audience Purpose Subject Tone |
| Ethos | argument that appeals to the audience based on speaker's credibility and authority |
| Pathos | argument that appeals to the audience based on emotions |
| Logos | argument that appeals to the audience based on logic and reasoning |
| Allusion | reference to something else |
| Analogy | comparison between something familiar and something unfamiliar for clarifying unfamiliar |
| Anaphora | repetition of word and phrase at beginning of phrases. |
| Anecdote | short story usually personal |
| Antithesis | a direct contrast of parallel word groupings(not___ but___) |
| Diction | word choice to convey certain effects |
| Connontation | refers to the emotions and attitude associated with a word; goes beyond literal |
| Denotation | dictionary definition of the word |
| Colloquialism | refers to informal speech or phrasing |
| Dialect | speech of a particular region or group as it is different than standard speeches |
| Elevated Diction | formal or lofty speech |
| Eupemism | substituting mild words for harsher ones |
| Hyperbole | outrageous exaggeration |
| Parallel Structure | repetition of the same grammatical Structure noun with noun, verb with adj. |
| Repetition | words, sounds, ideas used more than once to create emphasis |
| Rhetorical Question | question that requires no answer |
