Solutions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Alloy | Solution of two or more metals. 2 liquids (metals) are mixed together |
| Aqueous | a solution with with water as solvent known a universal solvent because it dissolves so many substances |
| Concentrated | A lot of solute is dissolved |
| Dilute | Only a little solute is dissolved. |
| Qualitative | Descriptive observations, more general, NOT a specified amount |
| Quantitative | Describes the numerical concentration in a solution. |
| Rate of Solution | How fast a solute dissolves in a solvent. |
| Saturated | Contains the maximum amount of solute for a given quantity of solvent at a specific temperature and pressure. |
| Solute | Substance being dissolved. Salt in saltwater (less of this). |
| Solvent | Substance doing the dissolving. H2O in saltwater (more of this). |
| Solution | Homogeneous (same) mixture of two or more substances in a single physical state (saltwater). |
| Solubility | How many grams of substance can be dissolved in a given quantity of solvent at a specific temperature and pressure. |
| Supersaturated | Holds MORE than the maximum amount of solute at a given temperature and pressure. |
| Unsaturated | Contains less than the maximum amount of solute at a given temperature and pressure - more can be dissolved. |
| Vapor | When a solid or a liquid enters the gas phase (evaporation). |
