| feature | a characteristic that all members of a species have |
| trait | a specific characteristic of an individual organism |
| variation | any difference in traits between individual organism |
| function | how something works |
| protein molecule | a type of large molecule that preforms important functions inside organisms. |
| structure | the way something is shaped or constructed. |
| gene | an instruction for making a protein molecule. |
| Gene version (aka allele) | a specific form of a gene that provides instructions for making a particular protein molecule. |
| mutation | a random change to a gene that sometimes resulting in a new trait. |
| heterozygous | having gene versions that are different. |
| homozygous | having gene versions that are the same. |
| inherit | to receive genes from a parent. |
| sexual reproduction | the process in which two parent pass on their genes to create offspring |
| asexual reproduction | the process in which only one parent passes on their genes to create offspring |
| recessive | the trait is inherited only if the offspring inherits 2 copies of the allele for that trait (represented by lower case letters. |
| dominant | the trait is inherited as long as the offspring receives on copy of the allele for that trait (represented with capitol letters) |
| Chromosome | a long piece of DNA that contains many genes |
| DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) | a type of molecule that genes and chromosomes are made of |
