| feature | a characteristic that all members of a species have |
| trait | a specific characteristic of an individual organisim |
| variation | any diffrence in traits between individual organisims |
| function | how something works |
| protein moecules | a type of large molecule that preofrms important functions inside organisims |
| structure | the way something is shaped or constructed |
| gene | an instruction for making a protein molecule |
| gene version (aka=allele) | a specific form of a gene that provides instructions for making a particular preotein molcecule |
| mutation | a random change to a gene that sometimes results in a new trait |
| heterozygous | having gene versions that are diffrent |
| homozygous | having gene versions that are the same |
| inherit | to receive genes from a parent |
| sexual reproduction | the process in wich only one parent passes on its genetic infromation to creat offspring |
| asexual reproduction | the process in which only one parent passes on its genetic information to creat offspring =cloning |
| recessive | the trait is inherited only if the offspring inherits 2 copies of the allele for that trait (reprsented by lowercase letters) |
| dominant | the trait is inherited as long as the offspring recives atleast one copy of allele for that trait (representedby capitol letters) |
| chromosome | a long piece of DNA that contains many genes |
| DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) | a type of molecule that genes and chromosomes are made of |
